The aging process is one that affects us all. There are many things people try to attempt to slow down the effects of aging. These include dietary measures, improving physical condition by visiting the gym or taking up a sport and for some it might mean opting to have some cosmetic surgery.
Cosmetic surgery was first widely used after the First World War in an effort to help heal the horrific injuries suffered by many soldiers. The results were mixed but some success indicated to surgeons that there was definitely a future in attempting to rebuild and restructure damaged tissue.
After World War Two there was again a need to pioneer new techniques to help soldiers injured during the conflict. Vast improvements had been made in all areas of medical treatment and a greater degree of success was achieved, helping many thousands of patients to rebuild their normal lives.
It wasn’t until the 1970s that surgeons, mostly in America, had the idea of adapting and improving many of these original techniques for use in cosmetic situations. With the greater degree of technology available to them they were able to achieve results that actually improved on the existing structure of the face and so modern cosmetic surgery was born.
Since the 1970s, technology has continued to improve at an exponential rate meaning that surgical techniques now are so advanced they could only barely have been conceived of when the first reconstructive surgeries were taking place. This has had the combined effect of making the treatments a great deal safer and also more affordable.
Now it is possible to have a variety of different treatments on all parts of the body. Cosmetic surgery is still used to treat patients who have suffered a birth injury or damage as the result of an injury, but it can also be used to slow down the effects of aging. Facelifts, dermal fillers and skin peels can make a patients skin look firmer and younger, especially when combined with some cosmetic dentistry treatment such as tooth whitening.
